Doctoral degree regulations

Are you considering doing a doctorate at the Faculty of Protestant Theology in Bonn? We are delighted that you are interested!

You can currently do your doctorate at our faculty with a supervisor or doctoral supervisor. If you do not have any previous qualifications, you will also complete a structured doctoral program with courses.

The legal basis for your doctorate is the current version of the doctoral degree regulations (PDF file for download, German).

Details on the doctoral program and an information sheet with the most important facts can also be found on our website.

Ph.D. regulations

From the summer semester 2024, students will have the opportunity to obtain a Ph.D. at the Faculty of Protestant Theology.
A cumulative doctorate is also possible.

Unlike the classic doctoral program with a Dr. theol. degree, the Ph.D. program does not require any knowledge of German and knowledge of old languages depending on the focus. This makes it an attractive option for international students as well.

Details on the new Ph.D. program can be found in the official Ph.D. regulations (PDF file for download, German).

For an overview also see our website.

Habilitation regulations

For researchers in the postdoctoral phase, the Faculty of Protestant Theology offers the possibility of habilitation, which leads to the determination of teaching qualification (facultas legendi) and, if desired, also to the award of teaching authorization (venia legendi) as a private lecturer.

Admission requirements are a theological doctorate from a Protestant theological faculty in Germany, a relevant doctorate from a German university or a doctorate from a foreign university recognized as equivalent by the faculty.
The legal basis for the habilitation is the habilitation regulations in their currently valid version (PDF file for download, German).
