Hae Seong Yang
PhD student
Hae Seong Yang is a PhD student at the Chair of Practical Theology (Prof. Dr. Sabrina Müller), Faculty of Protestant Theology, University of Bonn.
Her research focuses on the next generation of the Korean Protestant Church in South Korea and the next generation of Korean diaspora congregations in Germany.
The ethnographic study aims to examine the history of the Korean Church in order to understand how worship practices and understanding have evolved over time – and to draw conclusions about what worship for the next generation might look like in the future. Particular attention is given to the question of how children growing up today in the midst of the digital world perceive and experience church and worship. At the same time, the study explores what kind of preaching truly reaches the younger generation and what new, engaging forms of preaching might look like.
The Korean community as an ethnic group stands at the center of the investigation, with the researcher actively participating in community life and describing her observations. Depending on the course of the research process, the methodology remains open and can be adjusted as needed.
